Bauple Facts

Bauple was called Raby, the Public Lands Office  in 1896 asked if it would be possible to change the name from Raby to Bauple as Raby was confusion with Raby Bay in Brisbane (see letter) Bauple was spelled after the sugar mill. It is believed that Captain Alex MacKellar spelled Bauple.

The Bauple, Bopple, Baupal confusion
 The post office used a different spelling (Baupal) the school and the mountains were spelled (Bopple) and the locals and the sugar mill spelled (Bauple)  This went on until 1913 when the Dept of Public Lands Brisbane sent a letter asking for the correct spelling.

Macadamia (bopple nut) was  discover at the Bopple Mnts just west of Bauple by Allan Cunningham in 1828.

Historical Tour of Bauple


1- Salvation Army Hall
 The Church Services and Sunday School were conducted by the Ashtons.

2 – Connors Hall
 When this hall was built it was used for dances,  concerts, band practice and meetings.

2A – Hospital
 ln 1942, many soldiers were stationed in Baupleand the surrounding areas. Connors Hall became the field Hospital for the surrounding troops and the Salvation Army Hall was Headquarters for the Officers.


3– 11th Field Ambulance

 The soldiers in the 11t Field Ambulance were amped on the land now occupied by the Historical Society where Coynes reside.

4 – W. Hurt Wheelwright

 ln the 1880’s, an elderly pioneer conducted a wheelwrights shop on this site. His name was W. Hurt.


5 – Jim Bates Sawmill

 The sawmill was brought from Calliope in 1910 and erected in Mill Street. Jim and his two  brother, Tom and George fist operated the mill.. Jim’s sons, Ernie, George, Walter, Doug and Francis worked in the mill while Richard and Tom carted the logs and sawn timber. When war broke out Ernie, Doug and Francis enlisted and Jim sold the mill to Alf Pearson,_ but Jim managed the mill until Albert Schultz became manager.

6  - Melksham’s Boardinghouse

 Mrs. Melksham had a boardinghouse on this site.

7  - Bakehouse

 The first bakehouse was built and operated by Mr. Axelsen on Forestry Road where Henderson’s later lived. It is now owned by R. Tatnell. Later Mr. Axelsen moved his bakehouse to Mill Street. Bert Baker owned the bakehouse for many years. His brother Jack, and his sons Ray and Ronnie were the main bakers during that period.

8  - Duncan & Stewart’s Shop

 This shop mainly sold men’s clothes and boots. It also sold some grocery lines and small goods. Duncan & Stewart had a delivery van which operated in the district until it was destroyed by fire. Don also operated the Bauple Bus run to Maryborough.

9  - Baker’s Shop

 The first shop was owned by Stewart Crumby Cunningham.  The Cunningham family conducted the store until Bert Baker purchased it in 1913. It was a general store, Post Office, Telephone  Exchange, Newsagency and  Agent for the Commonwealth Bank. Bert also owed the bakehouse. After many years the store was sold to Sid Dumpleton. It later burnt down.

10 - Mount Bauple Sugar Mill
 
The Sugar Mill with its barracks, cookhouse, blacksmith shop and other buildings occupied this site. The mill first crushed in 1896 and final crushing was in 1950. It was sold in 1951.

11 - Manager

 The house in which the Sugar Mill Manager lived was built here.


12 - Cane Inspector
 
The cane inspector employed at the Sugar Mill lived in this house.

13 - Hopper’s Butcher Shop
 Mr. Hopper opened the first shop in Bauple. It was a butcher shop erected on this site and opened on 1st July, 1895.

14 - Roman Catholic Church
 This Church was opened in 1928. It served the community for many  years. After its closure it was sold. However, it remained in Bauple and became the present Community Church.

15  - Christian Endeavour Hall

 The MacKcllar family conducted Church services and Sunday School in the Hall from 1905. Some years later it became the Presbyterian  Church

16   - Bates Bros. Sawmill
 After the war, the Bates Brothers built a sawmill behind their Father’s home untill 1948 and operated the mill for some years.

 17  - Scott’s Boardinghouse

 Sid Scott and his wife conducted a boardinghouse on this site. The building was later purchased by Jim Bates and he and his wife and family resided here for many years.


 18  - Bertram’s Boardinghouse

 This boardinghouse is believed to have been owned by Mr. Poulsen, but it was run by Mrs. Fred Bertram. Miss Amy Bates was born in the boardinghouse over 80 years ago. The boardinghouse was later pulled down and carted to Maryborough where two houses were built out of the timber. The Bauple Brass Band built the present Band Hall on the site. The Hall was opened on 7th November, 1925.

 
19  - Bertram’s Blacksmith Shop
 Frank and Fred Bertram conducted a blacksmith shop at the rear of the boardinghouse.

 20  - Church of England

 St. Mark’s Church of England was built in 1927. Mr.. & Mrs. Roy Cunningham are thought to  be the first couple to be married in the church. After its closure it was sold for removal in the 1980’s.

21 - Gardiner’s Shop
 
Mr. John Gardiner owned a store in Tiaro so when he opened a grocery store in  Bauple, his brother Charlie managed the store until John moved to Bauple. John retired in about 1936 and the store was sold for removal.

22 - Andersen’s Merrick’s Boardinghouse
In 1924, Tom Mills built a shop and boardinghouse for Mr. Anton Andersen.. In the Following year, Mrs. Andersen became ill and Mr. Andersen sold out to Mr. Merrick. Mrs.  Merrick conducted the boardinghouse until after the  Sugar Mill closed. The building was removed to Tinana.

 23 - Conners Butcher shop

 
The butcher shop was operated by Mr. Connors who owned a butchers shop in Tiaro. When the meat arrived at the shop it was delivered around the township by lads on horseback.

24 - Bauple Cash & Carry
 In 1948 Mrs. Q Davis and her, Son-in-law Fred Brooks, opened 
 the store. Later her daughter Nola and her husband Graham
 owned the store and bus run. The store closed about 1968
